A Monument That Speaks for Us: Tamil Genocide Memorial Now Open in Canada

Something important happened recently for the Tamil community in Canada. For the first time, a public monument has been built to honour the lives lost during the Sri Lankan civil war — especially those who died in May 2009, during the final and most violent stages.

The Tamil Genocide Memorial, located at Ajax Rotary Park in Ontario, is the result of years of effort from local Tamil Canadians, community leaders, and activists. It was also supported by the Town of Ajax, which officially recognized the Tamil genocide — something that hasn’t happened in many other places.

This isn’t just a statue or structure. It’s a place where people can come together to remember, reflect, and educate. Many Tamil families who arrived in Canada as refugees or immigrants carry painful memories of what happened back home. Now, there's finally a space in this country that acknowledges that pain and honours that history.

People travelled from all over Canada — even from the U.S. — to attend the unveiling. Some brought their children, hoping the next generation will understand where they come from and what their community has gone through.

At NamKart, we feel connected to this moment too. Many of our vendors and buyers come from Tamil backgrounds — from Sri Lanka and beyond. And the products we sell often carry stories of resilience, tradition, and identity. Whether it’s a handmade item from Jaffna, a religious book, or a locally made Sri Lankan sweet, these things help keep our culture alive.

This memorial is just the beginning. We hope it will lead to more spaces, more conversations, and more recognition of Tamil voices in Canada.
