Diwali
Canada

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is the Festival of Lights—one of the most important and widely celebrated Hindu festivals across the world. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
Different regions have different legends, but the central theme is always triumph and renewal:
- In North India, it marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and his victory over Ravana.
- In South India, it celebrates Lord Krishna’s defeat of the demon Narakasura.
- In Jainism, it commemorates Lord Mahavira’s attainment of nirvana.
- In Sikhism, it aligns with Bandi Chhor Divas, when Guru Hargobind Ji was released from prison.
Diwali in the Tamil Community
In Tamil Nadu, it’s often called Deepavali and celebrated with:
- Oil baths before sunrise
- Pujas to Lord Krishna or Lakshmi
- Bursting firecrackers early morning
From Toronto to London, Malaysia to Mauritius, Diwali brings people together across cultures. Public Diwali melas (fairs), cultural shows, and temple events mark the occasion—even among non-Hindus who join in the festive spirit.
